| This is based on a Westlaw search,
in the JLR database, in mid-July 2002. Only faculty eligible are faculty
listed in the 2001-02 AALS Directory. Citation counts are rounded to
the nearest ten. There is a rough correlation between total citations
and prestige, less of a correlation between total citations and actual
quality (I would estimate that a third of the faculty with more than 1,000
citations could not get appointed at Texas, for example). The lists
are heavily dominated by constitutional law scholars, as well as scholars
in currently "hot" areas, like Critical Race Theory. Scholarly
areas are described quite broadly; here is what the abbreviations that
aren't obvious mean: Public (including constitutional and administrative
law, legislation, civil rights, etc.), Private (including torts, contracts,
and property), Crim (including substantive criminal law and criminal procedure),
Juris (jurisprudence), Fem Th (feminist legal theory), Crit Race Th (critical
race theory), Business (business law areas, including corporate, securities,
commercial law, bankruptcy, antitrust, and so on).
(Note: After #68, there is no data on 2000 rank.)
